Books: Special Interest Week, Day 4

Updated: Jun 11, 2023

Prompt: A Special Interest That Is Collected/Collections

Bookshelf during golden hour.

Books. Books. And more books. I love them. My dream is to have my own little library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and cozy blankets.

Current Collection

My current collections sits at around 100 books. The majority are mine, but some are my sister's.

I keep almost every book I read now with three exceptions:

  1. I've DNFed it.

  2. I finished the book, but I didn't completely enjoy it.

  3. I've held on to it, but realize it no longer sparks joy and I need to let it go.

Otherwise it stays on my shelf.

My Favourite Series

Heist Society Series by Ally Carter

I first read this in 7th grade and have since re-read the series two or three times. It's like Ocean's 11, but with teenagers. And honestly I require more caper tropes in my books, please and thank you. It's why the Six of Crows series by Leigh Bardugo is also one of my favourites (no matter how heartbreaking it is).

V.E. Schwab

I have read the Shades of Magic series and the Villains series and loved both. First off, Schwab's writing is fantastic and has impacted my own writing. Second, these stories changed the way I think about the fantasy genre. It's why I live by the writing advice that in order to write better you must first read because that's where ideas come from, that's what will expand your mind and how you define your genre.

Self-Help Books

The other half of my bookshelf is nonfiction and self-help books. I have my collection of Brene Brown books, but I also have several business, memoir, and psychology books as well. I love learning new things that pique my interest and I find the best way to do that is to read a book about it.

My Previous Collection

Have I read more than 100 books? Yes. But given my list of exceptions above, I have donated another 100 or more books. I read a lot of YA in elementary and high school and stopped enjoying the genre so I didn't keep them. If you are interested in the books I read back then, I keep a tag on my Storygraph to add any that I remember.
